Nr. 40 opens in layers rather than stages — a breath of fruity warmth and soft florals that frames what lies beneath without competing with it. There is sweetness here, and a fleeting softness, but it resolves quickly into something far more ancient and considered.
At the heart, olibanum burns with a dry, church-incense clarity — resinous and meditative. Agarwood rises beside it in its full complexity: smoky, animalic, dark, and sweet in the same breath, the kind of oud that commands presence without effort. Labdanum wraps the accord in a honeyed, leather-tinged warmth, deepening the oriental character and pulling everything into a cohesive, enveloping whole. Floral notes drift through like smoke — present but undefined, adding softness without breaking the gravity.
The dry-down is where Nr. 40 reveals its most intimate self. Ambergris — one of perfumery's most prized base materials — lends its incomparable radiance: warm, marine, and skin-like all at once, with a sillage that seems to amplify everything around it.
